Aging and Disability Resource Center of Monroe County
The Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) of Monroe County has two benefit specialists who help people figure out what benefits they are entitled to and help them to apply. They are available to meet with you in the ADRC office or a setting convenient to you.
The Disability Benefit Specialist (DBS) position is centered on providing confidential assistance to adults age 18 to 59 with physical disabilities, developmental disabilities, mental illness and/or substance abuse issues. Some services the DBS can provide include general assistance on benefit appeals, benefit denials, and loss or reduction of benefits; assistance in filing for SSDI and SSI; application assistance for FoodShare and Health Insurance benefits; SSA overpayment resolution; and referrals to other local services and programs.
The Elder Benefit Specialist (EBS) helps people who are 60 or older by providing benefit counseling, assistance and advocacy about a variety of subjects including:
- Public benefits
- Housing and Utility programs
- Health insurance
- Consumer law
- Income Support through Food Share and multiple Social Security programs
The EBS can provide current and accurate information on your benefits. They may also have alternate ways to help secure benefits or appeal denials of benefits. In addition, they can act as an advocate on your behalf with other parties, explain possible solutions, including legal action, and refer you to an appropriate attorney when necessary.
